< Murasaki from Japan >
Princess Nukata, a female poet and member of the imperial family during the Asuka Period (roughly from the end of the 6th century to the early 8th century), was loved by two emperors. The Man’yoshu, Japan’s oldest existing collection of waka poems, includes waka poems about a plant named “murasaki” (a kind of gromwell) composed by many poets, including Princess Nukata. The roots of murasaki have long been used for dyeing, and its purplish color has long been regarded as a noble color. For example, in Japan, the first system to rank officials into 12 levels, denoted murasaki as the color to represent the highest rank. Murasaki also appears throughout The Tale of Genji, set in the Heian period (roughly the 400 years from the end of the 8th century). Until today, this color has been loved by many people, being regarded as both a noble and mysterious color. We hope you will enjoy crocheting while thinking about the history associated with murasaki.
